The first position has won the debate because position two could not prove their arguments to be correct as well as position one did, and because their arguments were improper. First of all, in their defense for opening statement, position two stated that the quote “He is the eternal urge of desire establishing the purposes of all creatures.” on page 132 meant that the King of Gods had planned everything before establishing any creatures or objects. However, there is no proof that the King of Gods really exists. That is why we are discussing the topic of whether everything in the world exists or not. Also, another part of their opening statement quotes “Everything in this world has a purpose, so everything is utilized to make this world evolve. Therefore, everyone’s existence is important and has a meaning...The existence of each individual is essential to the continuous development of the world.” Here, position two is merely stating their thoughts repetitively without any evidence. The second position also states that the past sets up the future. If this were true, then the future would be known and there would be no excitement in life. Therefore, the world would be meaningless. I believe that the first position won the debate also because the opposition could not understand the fact that a life that works toward death is a meaningless life. Also, it was said during the debate there was purpose to life. However, that purpose would be eliminated when death occurs. I believe that the opposition could not defend this point very well. Beowulf said that life would still go on for others, and only Grendel’s life is over. This was not a decent argument because position one had already said that everyone will die at some point, and that is why life is meaningless.
